So while we’ve already picked out a few of the highlights of the Dodgers Spring Training schedule, there is one game that promises to be full of memories as the 50th Anniversary celebration of the team’s arrival in LA rolls on.  Yup, the Dodgers are going to play one exhibition game in the Los Angeles Coliseum, the first home for the team during the 1958 and 1959 seasons while Dodger Stadium was being constructed.  Personally, I can’t wait.  I remember my grandparents telling me and my brothers about going to games there (including the 1959 World Series).  Check out this image to see what how crazy the dimensions were (and keep it in mind as you read the excerpt below).

For fans of LA sports, there is simply no better writer than the late, great (and Pulitzer Prize winning) Jim Murray of The Los Angeles Times.  Here’s how he described the Dodgers arrival in Los Angeles in his autobiography, which is simply titled Jim Murray:

”O’Malley had a choice of Wrigley Field or or The Coliseum to showcase his team when it arrived.  There was no contest.  Wrigley Field, which he had purchased along with the franchise rights to LA from Phil Wrigley, was a 24,000 seat replica of Chicago’s Wrigley Field.  The Coliseum had 92,000 seats - from about 28,000 of which you could actually see the game.

O’Malley, who never had trouble adding, had no trouble opting for the 92,000 seats.  The baseball establishment was aghast.  I remember the commissioner of all baseball, Ford Frick himself, taking to the airways to deplore what would happen to the grand old game in this monstrosity of a ballpark.  Frick, who had been his biographer, always worried what would happen to Babe Ruth’s home run records.

To be sure, The Coliseum’s dimensions were a little startling.  To squeeze a ballpark in, left field was a bare 250 feet from home plate.  So they put up a 4o foot wire mesh fence.  ‘There goes Babe Ruth’s record!  Also Roger Maris’!” harrumphed Red Smith.  “Willie Mays’ll bunt over that thing.”

It was a Pittsburgh pitcher, Bob Friend, who first tipped me to the essential characteristics of the Wall.  “You’ll get a lot of lazy high flys that will go over.  But, you’ll get a lot of line drive hits that Willie Mays’ll hit that would go out for homers anywhere else in the world-but they’ll crash into that fence for a single.  It’ll even out.”

He proved prophetic.  The most home runs any Dodger ever hit in a year while they were playing in the Coliseum was 25 - Gil Hodges, 1959.  A Dodger pitcher, Johnny Podres, also accommodated himself to the geometry of the park.  “You just get’em to hit to right field,” he said.  “It’s 440 to the right field wall.  It’s inhuman.”

The moral of the story: You can play baseball anywhere.  Even indoors, as they were shortly to prove.”

Come on, how can you not want to go to this game?

[SATIRE ALERT]

The Dodger DogSerious Sports Networkis reporting that there is a rumor circulating that Andruw Jones asked for a lifetime supply of Dodger Dogs as part of his contract with the baseball franchise.

In response to questions from reporters, Scott Boras - who represents Jones - said “…Certainly Andruw loves Dodger dogs - and will receive a generous amount gratis - but he won’t receive them free for life…that’s just ridiculous.”

New Dodger manager Joe Torre also weighed in on the rumor when asked to comment by reporters.  Said Torre, “The guy’s an All Star, and all you people want to talk about his love of a delicious, ten-inch, spicy grilled hot dog that’s topped with mouth watering picante sauce.  Let it go”

Rest assured that we will be reviewing the Jones contract details to see if any hot dogs are mentioned.

Tiger Woods is an L.A. Dodgers Fan

Tiger Woods’ autograph is hard to come by.  He gives it very sparingly and uses Upper Deck to help limit forgeries that typically flood the market for autographs.

Tiger himself has only asked for two autographs in his entire life.  The first was from boxing great Muhammad Ali.  Who was the other?

Dodger great Sandy Koufax.

Why Koufax?  It turns out that Tiger Woods is a lifelong Dodger fan and has always felt that Sandy Koufax, along with Jackie Robinson, epitomized what the Dodgers were all about

Said Woods, “I’ve been a Dodger fan my entire life, and Koufax is the man.  For pitchers, you wouldn’t think of any other player.  During [five years in the 1960s] nobody could catch him.”

Tiger actually secured the autograph by reaching out to his sources at Upper Deck.  He mentioned to them that if any of them had contact with Koufax, could they possibly ask for an autograph.  The next time that Tiger bumped into his Upper Deck source, the rep handed him a baseball with a personalized inscription.

Woods has placed the ball amongst his other trophies and memorabilia.  “It’s at home in my bedroom, sitting right there.”

Well, it’s official - the Dodgers spring training schedule is now live. The Dodgers posted their schedule via press release on mlb.com. There’s a lot of “tentative” and “likely” sprinkled through it, so I’m guessing that there is more detail to come.

Two interesting notes:

1. The Dodgers are pushing for an exhibition game in Beijing against the San Diego Padres on March 15 and 16. Not sure how all the travel and jetlag will affect the spring performance of the team.

2. The Dodgers will be headed to Arizona and work out of the Oakland facility (Phoenix Municipal Stadium). They will host the Chicago White Sox on March 20th. The Dodgers are, of course, headed to Glendale Arizona for Spring Training 2009.

Here is the entire schedule, straight from the Dodgers:

While I can appreciate Gary Bennett and the knowledge of the National League that he brings to the Dodgers, I find it a bit ironic that not four days ago the Dodgers ran a lead story on their Web site with the headline “No Current Dodgers in Mitchell Report” (what’s even more interesting is that the club has since given the article a new headline: “Dodgers Cooperate with Mitchell Team.”  I can accept Bennett’s apology and look forward to seeing how he helps our pitching staff in 2008.  There’s a lot to be said for adding a solid veteran to the lineup for his mind, rather than his bat.  Next up for Ned: a middle reliever.
