Broxton Sets Down the Mets
So while the hero of the game tonight was certainly Casey Blake with that huge three-run homer in the 6th inning, you’ve got to give it up for Jonathan Broxton.
Just check out his line: 17 games, 4-0, 10 saves, 1.35 ERA, 32 Ks,7 walks. Oh, and as Vin Scully mentioned on the television broadcast, lefthanders are batting 2 for 33 against him (that’s a .060 batting average). Granted, many relief pitchers pick up cheap wins after blowing saves, but Broxton has been razor sharp…that 32/7 ratio is crazy and shows his domination so far this year.
But like many players on the Dodgers, I just hope he can hold on throughout the season. If Broxton goes down, there are not a lot of options to replace him, and the 7th and 8th innings make me nervous enough as it is with Mota lingering in the bullpen.
Random Note: While listening to the first half of the game on my way home from work this evening, I heard Vinnie use the phrases “kangaroo” and “coconut” in the same anecdote…it could have even been the same sentence. He was calling a foul ball hit by a Mets player (can’t remember who it was) and was describing how the foul ball bounced in the Dodgers dugout before “kangarooing” into the crowd, but not before almost hitting Kemp on the “coconut” while he was reaching for his batting helmet. That just made me smile…gotta love Vin Scully.
