Knee Injury Sidelines Andruw Jones for 4-6 Weeks
Well, Andruw Jones is officially out for 4-6 weeks, and I think I heard a cry of joy from Dodger Fans across the country. He’s headed under the knife and will miss approximately 4-6 weeks for rehab.
Now, having knee surgery probably won’t help Jones’ ongoing weight challenges any, but it does firm up a solid outfield lineup for the Dodgers in the meantime. Juan Pierre, Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier should be good to go for the next four weeks at a minimum, and create a situation where Jones may have some motivation to get back in shape before rejoining the team to improve his prospects for the starting lineup.
A technical note - the Dodgers put Jones on the 15-day DL right before game time today, and nabbed Terry Tiffee from AAA Las Vegas for their official roster (likely to act as a PH). This bumps our friend Nomar to the 60-day DL, so he’s going to be away even longer than expected.
The Bulldog Kicks Ass in Poker
Interesting interview with Orel Hershiser in Card Player Magazine the other day talking about his run in the NBC National Heads-up Poker Championship earlier this spring. I caught part of this on TV, and it was fantastic to watch the Bulldog bluff and intimidate pros like Freddy Deeb and Allen Cunningham and then go up to them and ask them to sign his baseball. Kind of like getting another notch on the old belt. Personally, I can’t wait to see what kind of run Orel has at the World Series of Poker in July.
Kershaw to Start on Saturday?
The kid was pulled from his start tonight after only one inning (striking out two). Hmm. It kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it? It makes Ken Gurnick wonder too!
Personally, I’m hoping Kershaw starts Sunday, as Dodgerfan will be at the Ravine for a little Sunday baseball. Maybe we can arrange a little Dodger Blogger Reunion over some adult beverages with our pals Sax and Orel from Sons of Steve Garvey and Erin from Beantown West.
A Pitching Staff Worthy of the United Nations
It’s hard to believe that the Dodgers’ 5-2 victory last night over the Reds was the first time a Japanese pitcher (Saito) had saved a game for a Japanese starter (Kuroda) in the majors. Ken Gurnick, of course, was all over the story. Call me crazy, but that’s pretty cool!
One thing that I don’t think Ken noticed were the pitchers of record in the May 17th game when the Dodgers beat the Angels. As our pal Sebastian points out over at Back Alley Media, we can all get along!:
In today’s interleague MLB game, which saw the Dodgers beat the Angels, 6-3, the Korean guy (Chan-Ho Park) started and pitched 4 strong innings, followed up by the Taiwanese guy (Hong-Chih Kuo), who pitched another strong 4 and earned the win, with the Japanese guy (Takashi Saito) closing it out in the 9th. Yes we can, in fact, all get along!
LA Dodgers IP / H / R / ER / BB / K / HR / Season ERA
C. Park 4.0 / 3 / 2 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 0 / 2.17
H. Kuo (W, 3-1) 4.0 / 3 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 4 / 0 / 2.40
T. Saito 1.0 / 2 / 1 / 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 2.08
Andruw Jones Has Torn Knee Cartilage
Yup, it’s true. According to ESPN, an MRI on Monday showed the tear. Jones is hoping to avoid surgery until the offseason. The thing is, a healthy Jones hasn’t been a whole lot of help so far in 2008, so what’s an injured Jones going to do? Maybe he should have the surgery now with a better opportunity to come back at full strength in next year’s spring training. That would then give us a starting outfield of Pierre, Kemp and Ethier. Thank God we had that fourth outfielder! What do you all think the Dodgers should do?
