So as the debate rolls on about who should close games while Saito is out, Joe McDonald at KLAC-AM had an interesting idea, and it’s one that I’m starting to really take to: what about moving Derek Lowe back to his old closer role? Think about it: Lowe was a reliever for the Red Sox from 1999 through 2001, and at his peak saved 42 games in 2000 earning him an All-Star selection. With closers at a real premium on the free agent market these days, this move appears very intriguing.

And it’s not like Lowe is the best pitcher on the Dodgers staff. The guy is going to be gone at the end of the year (on second thought, Ned loves the aging veterans that are on the verge of breaking down), so why not move him back to the bullpen? He’s proven that he has the mental makeup to get the job done and it could be one of the missing pieces this team needs to contend. That then allows Torre to bring Chan Ho Park back to the starting rotation. Hey, I’m not saying it’s the best solution, but it certainly is an intriguing option.

I’m not ready to sound the alarm yet, but Derek Lowe had another rough outing last night as the Dodgers lost 7-1 to the Houston Astros. As the LA Times points out, Lowe hasn’t reached the seventh inning in his last five starts and left after 5 1/2 innings last night. Hmm. If this issue was unique to Lowe I wouldn’t be so worried, but this reoccurring strain on the bullpen could really cause some significant issues in the near term.
