Kuroda Sidelined with Tendonitis – Park to Start Saturday

Hiroki Kuroda’s MRI revealed tendonitis in his right shoulder, resulting in the pitcher being scratched from his Saturday night start against the Indians. Kuroda’s injury means Chan Ho Park gets the nod for Saturday night, following up Eric Stults who will pitch in place of the injured Brad Penny on Friday.

The Dodgers have not said whether Kuroda will end up on the 15-day DL at this point – they could make it retroactive to June 13th, thus minimizing the time he misses on the roster if the injury is minor. However, Torre and Colletti seem determined to use releiver to manage Kuroda’s absence at this point.

At least Derek Lowe and the Dodger bats seem to be performing (albeit against the lowly Cincinnati Reds) – the boys in blue scored six runs on nine hits while Lowe went 5 1/3 innings with only one run, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts on the board.

Maybe there is hope…

DodgerFan Staff Hangs Their Heads Low Over Laker Defeat

Kobe Cries in Defeat

Well, at least the Celtics finally put us out of our misery with a good-ol fashioned ass-whoopin’ tonight. Chris @ Dodgerfan is more of a Laker purist than I, but all of us are ticked off over the way this series went down and the utter lack of offense from Kobe Bryant in games 5 and 6 other than the 1st quarter of each game.

At least the other L.A. team playing today actually won a game. What’s their name again???

First Penny, Now Kuroda?

Quite possibly.  From Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times:

The news went from bad to worse for the Dodgers on Tuesday, as they put Brad Penny on the 15-day disabled list and sent Hiroki Kuroda to Los Angeles to undergo a shoulder examination similar to the one Penny had a day earlier.

Kuroda will have an MRI exam this morning, making him unavailable to make his scheduled start tonight in Cincinnati. If Kuroda is cleared by team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache to resume pitching immediately, he will start at Dodger Stadium on Saturday when the Dodgers play host to Cleveland, Manager Joe Torre said.

Can this get any worse?  Ugh.

Penny Heads to the 15-day DL, Stults Called up From Minors

Brad Penny’s MRI is back, and the verdict is “inflammation of the bursa sac and mild tendinitis in his right shoulder”. The Dodgers quickly placed Penny on the 15-day DL (retroactive to last Saturday) and tapped LHP Eric Stults from AAA Las Vegas. Penny was slated to start against the Indians next Friday, so Stults will likely pick up that spot on the pitching roster.

What do we know about Stults? For starters, he’s 5-6 with a 3.59 ERA through 14 starts for Las Vegas this season. He’s also made 7 starts for the Dodgers over the past two seasons, so he’s comfortable with playing a fill-in role for the team and has experience in the Majors. However, he got shelled early and often in 2007, delivering a 5.82 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 38.2 innings with the Dodgers in 2007.

I wouldn’t hold out any hope that Stults will add anything special to the game on Friday, but given Penny’s latest performance he probably can’t do much worse.

“Bad Penny” Brad Penny Keeps Turning Up

Brad Penny in 2007
Just like any other bad penny, the Dodgers’ own Brad Penny keeps turning up – and nursing problems that continue to plague his performance. Saturday’s outing, in which Penny allowed seven runs on seven hits and two walks in just 3 2/3 innings, was his shortest of the season and left him sitting at 5-9 with a 5.88 ERA in 15 starts to-date.

So what’s the problem?

According to published reports, Penny was experiencing soreness in his shoulder during his pregame warm-up as well as after the game on Saturday. The 2007 NL All-Star has been experiencing discomfort all season and was sent home to undergo an MRI to determine the cause of the pain. Torre has indicated to MLB.com that it is likely that Penny will end up on the DL following the results of the exam, although the specific duration is still TBD.

All of this sidelines another Dodger veteran (albeit one who has not performed up to his talent and 2007 record this year) and forces Torre to head to the Minor Leagues AGAIN to find a prospect to bring up (assuming Penny’s stay on the DL is longer than one start). If Penny ends up being sidelined much past the all-star break, it is likely the Dodgers would opt to buy out the last year of Brad’s contract for the stipulated $2 million fee. Rolling the dice on Penny would mean taking on the risk that these mysterious shoulder pains might return and also paying up a hefty $9.25 million for the final year of his contract.

Perhaps the most frustrating part of Penny’s latest problems is that the Dodgers bats actually came alive on Saturday night, as Andre Ethier homered and had four RBIs while Loney put up a single and a pair of doubles and Young singled three times. Even Matt Kemp, back from his two-game suspension, ponied up an RBI infield single.

At this stage in his career, Penny has to decide if he can play through painful moments and synch with the offense when it counts. Saturday’s meltdown and ensuing comments from Penny appear to indicate he is reluctant to utilize all of the pitches in his arsenal when he’s hurting:

I tried to get through it. It’s the same thing that’s been going on. I thought I was over it. The last two starts were pretty good but it’s back again and I’ve just got to get it checked out…I didn’t feel good in the first inning, and I didn’t feel good in the bullpen…I feel it on every pitch, so that makes it tough. It affects everything. The big thing is location. When you know it’s going to hurt, you don’t really want to throw it.

Now the big question – who to bring up if Penny is out for the forseeable future? My thoughts on that topic tomorrow…
